For about a week now, this stray puppy has been wandering around the neighborhood. Some people brought him by last weekend asking if I knew who owned him and I didn't. He showed up again earlier this week and we put some food out for the little guy. He was so hungry that he didn't chew the adult sized kibbles, he swallowed them whole. We couldn't figure out if he was dumped by someone or if he ran away, because he did have a choke collar on but no tags. Either way we knew we had to get that collar off of him eventually or else it would choke him as he grew (and puppies grow REALLY fast).
Anyway, he's nervous and shy around people but not so much other dogs. We'd tried to coax him around with one of our own dogs but the puppy just kept running off. We went off to the mall today to get Christmas gifts and Mike stopped by a local vet for something that would drug the puppy enough to get his collar off. I know drugging him sounds bad but we'd tried EVERYTHING we could think of at that point. Anyway, we get back home and I look in the back yard to check on my own dogs...and chaos puppy is running around there with them. He had dug himself into my back yard to be with my dogs.
He was a lot more at ease seeing Mike and I interact with our dogs. I got him to come close enough to me that I could pet him some and get that choke collar off. It was pretty snug, probably would have been too tight in a week. So he's out of eminate danger for the moment and he's getting along great with my dogs.
We are NOT keeping this little guy. The base in Columbus has a two dog limit, so only Chessa and Toby are going with us; Meshu is going back up to Illinois to Mike's family (they can take care of him better on a farm than we could in a neighborhood). I really don't think he's owned by anyone, so I'm going to make some calls to a few adoption agencies and no-kill shelters in town to see if they can take him in. We can't foster this dog either, because we'll be moving so soon.
If anyone in the Macon/Warner Robins/Milledgeville area wants a *FREE* puppy, give me a call!!! He's male, not fixed (at least I don't think he is...I can see little balls between his legs O_O;;), looks like some sort of pit bull breed but I'm not sure. He's maybe 12-15 weeks old (guessing on this one) and he's shy but he just needs a little coaxing and patience. He does really well with other dogs, too. Give me a call or email if you're interested or know of anyone who may be!
